Members of the society want to preserve the unique bright, clear, and unpolluted light of skies of Central Otago as an International Dark Sky Reserve, in consultation with residents and with Ngāi Tahu and Aukaha, applying to the Central Otago District Council and the International Dark Sky Association. A Reserve is a public or private land possessing an exceptional quality of starry nights and nocturnal protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural, heritage and/or public enjoyment.
An International Dark Sky Reserve does NOT mean changing existing lighting. It DOES mean protecting this pristine natural resource with sensible minimal impact lighting (following International Dark Skies Association standards). It IS a simple, free way to ensure our children will have access to the stars. The proposed international airport at Tarras is incompatible with such a reserve. The proposed reserve would be similar to the Mackenzie Basin/Tekapo and the Aoraki Reserves, covers no towns, and would be 2,492.58 km². Naseby is well along the road to becoming a Dark Sky community. The reserve will be adjacent to it.
